A Guest in their Home

"A Guest in Their Home" highlights common issues for new residents which can affect their wellbeing.
Staff are given the opportunity to explore their role in helping residents to feel 'at home'. Topics covered include communication, self-empowerment, meaningful activity and internal locus of control.
Staying Socially Connected
One of the key contributors of depression and depressive symptoms is a lack of social support. This area deals with how to improve staff/client relations within the home, and creating a socially stimulating environment. Also discussed are ways of encouraging visits from friends and relatives, and the importance of involving the community where at all possible.
Getting to Know You
Consider the fundamental changes which have ocurred for a new resident. They may not be settling well, or have other issues which need to be resolved. It is vital to really take the time to get to know one another. Staff need to get to know residents well, picking up on when problems begin to affect their coping skills.
Self Empowerment through Valued Contribution
Learned helplessness is a common reaction to the perceived loss of control many residents experience upon moving to a care home. As the locus of control shifts from the resident to the carer, an overwhelming apathy can often develop. This topic advocates ways of boosting morale, and increasing choice in the daily living activities of each resident. Empowering residents through valuing their contributions can improve self esteem dramatically.
Keeping Busy with Meaningful Activity
A lack of mental stimulation can have the most devastating effect on mental and physical health. Yet it can be eliminated as a team effort. This topic discusses the importance of variety, and how bringing 'real life' elements into the care setting can fundamentally alter residents' perspective on their environment.
This Workshop raises awareness of mental health needs within the care home. Excellent as an introductory tool for new staff.
